On Monday 9th June, Bedford School hosted their new Quarry Debating Competition for Lower Sixth students. BGS were invited and we brought over a team of three students – Lily Deng, Mitali Misra and Shazmin Ahamed Rijal.

It was an excellent night of debating with some interesting and thought-provoking motions being argued. Our team had to argue the proposition for the motion that ‘This house would, in no circumstances, fight for King and country.’ They had prepared their arguments extremely well and remained calm under pressure, dealing with the points of information from the opposition team in a thoughtful and clear manner.

All students got the chance to receive some feedback from the judges at the end of the evening, giving them useful pointers that they can take forward with them to their next debate. A special well done goes to Mitali who won an award for ‘best proposition summary’ on the night, meaning the judges felt she was the best summary speaker out of five different teams that participated!
