On Wednesday 18th March, the Annual General Inspection (AGI) held at Bedford School was a huge success for the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) contingents from Bedford Girls’ School and Bedford School.
This year’s event was particularly special. On arrival, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal was received by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Susan Lousada, before being introduced to Mrs Gemma Gibson, Headmistress and other dignitaries. The parade then formed up for a general salute, followed by a detailed inspection which concluded with a full march-past. The contingents presented an impressive and memorable sight as they stood smartly lined up on the Parade Ground.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, whose lifelong commitment to the British Armed Forces and cadet organisations made her a particularly fitting and inspiring Inspecting Officer, spent time speaking with cadets about their training and experiences in the CCF. Her genuine interest and warmth made the occasion even more memorable for all those involved.
The cadets were led by BGS student Danae Karavaggelis (Upper Sixth), who is Head of Corps for the BGS and Bedford School CCF. She said: “It was a wonderful day I’ll never forget, from training for the shooting competition, field gun, weapon handling, command tasks and flight simulator, to touring the Lord Lieutenant around the activities with Major Lumley-Wood and Stirling and sharing lunch with dignitaries before the AGI dinner. I’m incredibly proud of the whole contingent; it honestly couldn’t have gone better.”
Following the inspection, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal proceeded to the Bedford School Memorial Hall to unveil a new Memorial Board commemorating 21 Old Bedfordians who lost their lives in the First World War.
BGS Flight Lieutenant CCF - RAF Section, Dr Tansell reflected on the day: “The AGI parade was a clear demonstration of the cadets’ discipline, professionalism, and pride. Under bright skies and in front of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and HM Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, every cadet rose to the occasion and delivered a performance of the highest standard. Their outstanding conduct reflects not only their commitment, but also the strength of our contingents as a whole.”
Mrs Gibson said: “It was an immense privilege to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Our cadets were outstanding and this is a day all of us will remember for a very long time. The event not only recognised the cadets’ commitment and growth but also celebrated the enduring importance of service and community in education.”
The visit stands as a proud moment for everyone involved, a day that highlights the strength of the CCF’s partnership and the inspiring example set by young people working together in the spirit of discipline, respect and shared purpose
