MUN

On Saturday 17th November, our Year 11 and Lower Sixth delegates took part in the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at RGS Guildford. Throughout the day, students engaged enthusiastically in debates on a wide range of complex and controversial topics. Our delegates reflected on their experiences:

Safa Akbur, Zoya Azeem, Anwesha Singh (Year 11)

“RGSMUN was a very engaging experience. We learnt many skills, including collaborating and stepping out of our comfort zones. Zoya won the ‘Highly Commended Delegate’ award in the Human Rights Committee for debating LGBTQ+ rights and digital privacy, which was incredible.

“The Human Rights Committee highlighted how different countries viewed controversial topics. In the Environmental Committee, we debated protecting coral reefs and renewable energy, and in SPECPOL, refugee access and social media propaganda. The session ended with some enjoyable karaoke by Nigerian delegates.

“Representing the UK in different committees was one of our favourite roles, and we cannot wait for the next conference in Cambridge!”

Megan Robertson, Lara Spajić and Nicole Lapis (Lower Sixth)

“The conference at Guildford was an interesting and enlightening experience. With all BGS delegates representing the United Kingdom, it helped prepare us for the upcoming CAMMUN. The committees hosted lively debates, with delegates presenting well-planned arguments.

“The ECOSOC committee debated post-COVID wealth disparity and unemployment, passing two of three resolutions. In the Security Council, three of four resolutions on the Sahel region and demilitarisation were passed, creating memorable moments of strategy and collaboration.

“The Historical Security Council debated terms for the 1918 armistice, passing four clauses, including one proposed by the UK on dividing Austria-Hungary. After tense negotiations and many vetoes, a conclusion was reached.

“In the General Assembly, the crisis involved a zombie apocalypse. While the UK’s non-peaceful approach was not ideal, delegates debated virus spread for almost an hour, culminating in Germany passing a clause that ended the world!”
