On Friday 30th January to Sunday 1st February, 30 students took part in the Cambridge MUN conference (CamMUN) at The Stephen Perse Foundation (SPF). This has become a regular fixture for the MUN Club and one that is eagerly anticipated each year.
With the theme of The World We Leave Behind: The Next Generation, over 280 students from around the world took part and considered various topics with the aim of looking for solutions achieved through discussion, debate and consensus. At the opening ceremony we were honoured to hear a speech from Dame Menna Rawlings, who is now president of Queens College but was previously a diplomat and most recently the UK Ambassador to France. She set the tone for the conference with an engaging and enlightening speech on diplomacy and democracy.
Along with the debating, MUN is about meeting other people and the social event on Saturday evening proved very popular. The BGS delegation were a delight to be with and fully engaged with the conference. They utilised all their hard work and research to debate in an informed and confident way. A special mention to Lara Spajic who was voted Best Delegate in UNICEF. Safa Akbur (UNICEF), Zara Moore (ECOSOC), Mitali Misra (CRISIS), Hania Tauqueer (HICJ) and Nawaal Qazi (Security Council) all received Honourable Mentions for their contributions.
Safa Akbur (Year 11) “CamMUN 2026 was a fantastic experience. I truly enjoyed every moment, but the social event and the chance to connect with new international friends were the clear highlights! The debates in UNICEF were some of the most engaging I’ve experienced. I had a great back-and-forth with the delegate of the UK, Lara from the Lower Sixth; she remained incredibly composed throughout and well-deserved the Best Delegate award. I am very pleased to have received an Honourable Mention myself. This was easily my favourite conference to date, and UNICEF was the best committee I have ever been a part of. I am already looking forward to returning next year.”
Hania Tauqeer (Lower Sixth) “CamMUN 2026 was a great experience. This is the second year I have attended the conference, and this time my committee discussed the fate of Nazi Germany. In the Historical International Committee delegates were assigned historical figures instead of countries and so a whole separate set of rules applied. I was given Konrad Adenauer (the first chancellor of West Germany) and thankfully I was able to achieve my initial aim, which was to prevent the Eastern border of Germany being reduced to the Oder-Neisse line. Since I take three stem subjects, MUN is a great way to develop skills in areas like history and public speaking. I’d like to thank SPF for hosting such a lovely event and I look forward to attending next year.”
