Lunar New Year Celebrations

In the lead up to the Lunar New Year, the BGS community hosted a lively Lunar New Year themed celebration during school lunchtime on Friday 20th January.

The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, was celebrated over multiple days from Sunday 22nd January. The occasion is observed by many people of Chinese descent and is also commemorated in other countries across Asia, including South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. This year’s Zodiac marked the Year of the Rabbit – seen as the luckiest, people born in this year believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded and ingenious!

During lunch time, festivities kicked off with an array of the finest Chinese inspired fare. Our amazing Green Kitchen team prepared mouth-watering dishes including Spring Rolls, Szechuan Chicken, Vegetable Stir Fry and Warm Mandarin Pudding with pouring cream.

Mrs Tombs (Deputy Catering Manager) added: “The best bit of a celebration lunch like this for me is watching our students showing their cohorts how to use chopsticks, pointing out sinograms on the decorations and explaining what they mean. We also had to take guidance from a student on the orientation of some of our decorations to prevent us putting them upside down when decorating the Dining Hall! A great afternoon was had by all, and we are already looking forward to our next theme day.”
