By Mrs Howard (Year 6 Teacher)

This week and last, Year 6 have been enjoying talks from parent volunteers who have come in to share their knowledge on the technology that impacts their careers: cardiology and virology.

This opportunity has really wrapped up our unit of inquiry very nicely, where we have been exploring: “How scientific and technological advances impact the world we live in”. The students were able to learn about careers in pharmacology and how prescription drugs are made and how long it takes. They also learned about the heart from a cardiologist, how a diagnosis is made and what it takes to become a nurse specialising in scanning technology. The link to different careers was amazing for the students to see and we were all able to see the enormous impact of technology in the field of medicine, how it has advanced and where it might go in the future. Thank you to our parent volunteers Mr Ayers and Dr Kenny for coming in to talk to us!

Abbi (6I) said: “It was interesting that the cardiologist brought a model that meant we could practise scanning the heart, seeing inside the body was fascinating.”

Phoebe (6C) reflected: “Both talks gave me a deeper understanding. I now have a lot of knowledge about how medication is made and how the heart works and what people do when it goes wrong.”

Leila (6H) said: “Mr Ayers talk was very interesting, I really liked learning about his job in pharmaceuticals and how it worked. He has really inspired me to learn more about Science and medicine.”
