Whole School Rowing

By Mrs Reeves (Director of Rowing)

Over the Easter Holidays, 30 students and four members of rowing staff headed to the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham on our annual training camp.

With four full days of hard training ahead of our summer regatta racing season, students worked hard and had invaluable time training on a 2km multi-lane course throughout the week. The camp was a huge success, and great fun both on and off the water with evening entertainment including the camp quiz and annual ‘BGS Rowing Talent Show’!

Our Lower Sixth rowers offered their highlights:

“Camp kicked off with a bang, with seat racing which we were all so thrilled about. The week was a great test of our mental capabilities and technical abilities due to the varying conditions that we faced. The evenings were thoroughly enjoyed by all, filled with lots of laughter, organised by the senior coxes we had the annual camp quiz, congratulations to Stroke of Genius (us the J17’s) who finally managed to beat the coaches on their 3rd attempt. The talent show was also enjoyed by all, congratulations to Visor Bro for their 3rd consecutive win. Overall the camp was great fun and has prepared us well heading into an exciting regatta season.”

We are very excited that this bank holiday weekend marks the start of the regatta season, with crews racing at London 2012 Olympic Venue, Dorney Lake, on Sunday at Wallingford Regatta and Monday at the Junior Sculling

We always have a strong presence to cheer on our enthusiastic rowers on their home stretch of river. The Alumnae and Friends of Bedford Girls' School Rowing Club (FBGSRC) will be situated together by the Suspension Bridge, serving delicious refreshments throughout the day and everyone is invited to join us. It is an all-day event – so please feel free to pop by to enjoy refreshments and cheer on the rowers. Bring your picnic blankets and deckchairs. Spread the word and show your support for our rowers, we would be delighted to see you.

Our first race is at 8.32am, and last race is at 7.18pm There will be a race timetable printed out for you to follow our crews throughout the day.

We cannot wait to hear the infamous “BGS Roar” from the banks of the River Ouse this weekend.
