Diversity and Inclusion

On the last day of the Spring half term, the Diversity and Inclusion team organised a vibrant Cultural Dress-Up Day event.

The school community were encouraged to wear something that best represented their culture or identity, whether it was a representation of where they are from or something they are passionate about. They took part in a fashion show in the Assembly Hall at lunchtime, which featured incredible outfits and some fantastic dance moves!

Saarah Javaid (Diversity and Inclusion Captain) reflected on the event: “As this year’s Diversity and Inclusion team we wanted to make sure that we hosted a new and unforgettable event. This led us to the idea of a cultural dress up day with a lunchtime  event, where anyone was welcome to come onto stage and represent their country or what they stand for. This was very successful, we had a huge turnout and it was so encouraging to witness hundreds of students and staff cheering on those from different backgrounds.

“The atmosphere of the day was incredible and it really highlighted the diversity displayed within the school, with students representing countries from all continents. This was so important as it gave everyone the opportunity to learn and support different cultures through exciting ways such as clothing, music and dancing. Since the event we have received so much positive feedback, so hopefully this can continue for future years!”

Sara Didi ((Diversity and Inclusion Prefect) added: “Helping to run the Culture Day this year was an unforgettable and memorable experience. We were very surprised by the huge turnout of students and staff as students showcased their culture and performed a variety of cultural dances. The importance of this day was to positively showcase different cultures and show how diverse the BGS community is. I am so proud of all the students who were involved and proud of all the students and staff who cheered on those who participated.”

Fiza Hasnain (Diversity and Inclusion Prefect) said: “Culture Day 2024 was an incredible celebration of the diversity within BGS. Our lunch time fashion show was a massive success with students from a range of years attending to represent their own cultures, to admire others and to encourage their peers. The Diversity and Inclusion team put a great deal of work into organising and running the event and making sure it was very inclusive through getting student consensus on the countries being represented and the music played for each one. A playlist was compiled of songs from each country and slides were made and projected in the background to celebrate each country. The singing, the dances, the cheering, and the laughter from everyone were so incredibly rewarding for us to see.”
