We are over the moon to announce that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, Lara Spajic (Year 9), claimed three gold medals at the BJJ Junior World GI and No-Gi Championships 2023 (8-9th July) in Aldersley Leisure Village, Wolverhampton.

After securing two Bronze medals in the previous year, Lara dominated against the best and brightest junior martial artists in two days filled with explosive athleticism. Competing in three distinct tournaments, Lara showcased her mastery in the Gi division, which involves a durable cotton jacket, reinforced drawstring bottoms and a belt that symbolises rank. In the Gi Absolute category, there is a test of skill where weight restrictions are lifted within one's belt division. Lastly, in the Nogi contest, which focuses on grappling without the traditional uniform, usually featuring a rashguard top and shorts.

The overall calibre of the martial artists competing in this event was world-class. Within the Absolute (unlimited weight) Gi competition, Lara faced her toughest battles, as all medalists from the yellow belt rank were involved. Nonetheless, she triumphed in a tight final match, executing an arm bar submission that secured her victory.

The Nogi final was a nail-biting affair, with Lara finding herself trailing in points. However, she emerged triumphant once again, securing yet another arm bar submission to claim the championship title.

Lara reflected on the competition: “An amazing journey at the World Junior Championships. Last year, I came away with two bronze medals. This year it was three golds. It has taken 10 years to get to this level in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I'd like to thank my coaching team at Kraken in Bedford and my family for supporting me. I hope more girls take up martial arts - for self-defence, as a competitive sport and for friendships."
