Sixth Form STEM

We are thrilled to announce that Lower Sixth student, Mia Krnic, has been accepted onto a student fellowship programme with Columbia University.

Known as the JSTEP (Journal of Science, Technology, Ethics and Policy) Global High School Fellowship, the virtual online programme is geared towards senior school students from all over the world who are passionate about science, technology, ethics, and policy.

The program will consist of a series of talks and workshops led by members of the Columbia JSTEP team as well as Columbia professors, culminating in all fellows writing their own original piece to be published in the journal. This is such a fantastic achievement as approximately only 100 students worldwide have been carefully hand-selected. Mia’s selection process involved submitting ideas for a research paper in the journal, related achievements in STEM related subjects and a recommendation statement from Dr Gates (Head of Chemistry).

Mia reflected about the fellowship: “I found out about the programme via the @internshipgirl Instagram account that I follow which aims to empower female students to be successful in a variety of fields, such as STEM and politics, and gives academic advice. I applied for the programme as I’m eager to apply my skills to unconventional settings, such as when I attended the CamMUN conference in December and applied my knowledge of cyber security, physics and cryptanalysis in the crisis committee.

“My main subject areas are STEM, as I take Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level. However, I’ve recently become more interested in exploring how these subjects impact the wider world. For instance, I love formal theory (a branch of mathematics), which can be applied to real-world matters, such as wars and elections. It’s crucial to learn the work of great mathematicians and scientists. However, with worldwide political instability and crises all over the world, it’s even more important to analyse how their work improved the world and try to do the same ourselves - for the future of humanity.”

Head of Philosophy and Religion, Mrs Greenwood, who is also a MUN Coordinator at BGS said: “We are absolutely delighted that Mia has been accepted onto the JSTEP Fellowship. Mia has always had a natural flair for mathematics and computer science so it is exciting to see her embrace the opportunity to further develop her knowledge and practical application of these subjects. We are also impressed to see Mia use her initiative to participate in activities and opportunities beyond the curriculum.”
