By Mrs Button (Year 4 Teacher)

This Autumn term, Year 4 have been getting to know Varjak Paw, the young cat at the heart of S. F. Said's exciting adventure story. So far, we have read Chapters 1-7, and we have already been drawn into the mysterious and fascinating world of the Paw family.

We have discovered that Varjak lives with his family in the isolated House of the Paw, where life is very different from what we might expect. As we have read, we have begun to learn more about Varjak's personality, his family and the strict rules that shape his life.

The first seven chapters have given us plenty to discuss. We have made predictions about what might happen next, explored unfamiliar vocabulary and used clues from the text to make inferences about the characters. We have particularly enjoyed thinking about Varjak's feelings and the challenges he is beginning to face.

Our reading has also led to some fantastic discussions about bravery, family, responsibility and making difficult choices. We have been asking questions such as: What makes someone brave? Can we be courageous even when we are frightened? How do our experiences shape the choices we make?

There have already been some mysterious and dramatic moments in the story, and we are certainly curious to find out what happens next! With so many questions still unanswered, we are looking forward to continuing Varjak's journey and discovering where his adventures will take him.
