Sixth Form Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)

By Dr Howe (DofE Manager)

Our intrepid Gold DofE students headed up to the Lake District for their four-day qualifying expedition in July, having really taken on board what they had learned during their practice expedition.  Mr Bowden, Mrs Sadler and I  were extremely impressed with all participants, their cooperation and support for each other and the ‘can do’ approach they all adopted.

Imogen Blower (Upper Sixth) reflected: “Completing my DofE Gold Expedition was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. The expedition required months of preparation, including practising navigation, planning routes, preparing equipment and learning how to work effectively as a team. We had to carefully consider our route and make decisions as a group, knowing that we would be responsible for solving problems ourselves.

“I was challenged by the physical demands of walking for long periods while carrying a heavy rucksack. The distance and changing terrain tested my stamina, particularly when we were tired or dealing with difficult weather conditions.

“Teamwork was particularly important throughout the expedition. We each had different strengths, whether that was navigation, organisation, cooking or keeping morale high. Working together meant listening to different opinions and compromising when making decisions. There were inevitably moments when we were tired or frustrated, but I learnt that communication was crucial in these moments.

“Despite the challenges, there were many memorable moments. Reaching our campsite at the end of a long day, cooking together and enjoying the surrounding countryside made the hard work worthwhile. The experience also gave me the opportunity to appreciate the outdoors and spend time away from the distractions of everyday life.

“Overall, completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition was an experience that pushed me both physically and mentally. It was a demanding experience, but one that I am proud to have completed and that I will take valuable lessons from in the future.”
