Junior School Curriculum

The Junior School has a tailor-made curriculum written to inspire, challenge and engage our young learners. Through our Junior School Enhanced Curriculum, we provide purposeful and memorable learning experiences which help the girls develop and acquire the skills they need for the future.

The Enhanced Junior School Curriculum was launched in September 2014, based on the latest pedagogical thinking.  We recognise that we need to educate girls for the 21st Century, to encourage them to be independent thinkers, to have creative ideas, to be willing to take a risk and put these ideas confidently into practice. Our curriculum encourages the girls to be problem solvers and appreciate that the joy of learning is not necessarily the solution but the perseverance in trying to find it. In this way we are encouraging our girls to be resilient in their learning, to develop a growth mind set and not worry if they make mistakes. In this way the girls truly learn.   The curriculum joins up the dots of today’s modern world, making sense to our girls and engaging them in their learning.

Every term the girls explore a Unit of Enquiry which takes a theme and explores it holistically across the breadth of the curriculum.  The Unit of Enquiry sets the context for learning in subjects such as Science, History, Geography, RS, DT, Art and PSHE.  The use of technology, including the use of individual iPads, form an integral part of the curriculum as the girls learn how to use, interpret and analyse the information that is now so freely available to them.

There is a firm focus on Mathematics and English in the Junior School as these provide the girls with key functional literacy and numeracy skills.  In addition they benefit from the expertise of individual subject teachers in Modern Foreign Languages, PE, Music, Drama and Dance.

In Year 6, as part of the transition process to Senior School, girls study the three sciences as separate disciplines in the Senior School laboratories.  They also experience a wider range of art and technology subjects with dedicated Food Technology, Design Technology and Textiles lessons.
