Our aim here at Bedford Girls’ School is to develop swimming through all years of the school and produce athletes performing at the highest level.
Development
We have a two way approach to deliver our swimming programme:
1. School PE timetabled swimming
This delivers the highest quality swimming lessons with a very heavy focus on swimming technique.
2. Our extensive after school extra-curricular swimming session
This session is focused on implanting high level technique into the girls swimming training. These are quite physical demanding sessions aimed at making the girls much fitter and faster in competitive swimming races and equally fitter and faster on the sports field.
Specialist Coaching
Our coaching team is headed up by Mr Edward Castro who joined BGS from the University of Bath. He won his first Open Water event in July 2005 and came 5th in the National 5km a month later. In 2006 Edward was the National Schools Biathlon champion and was selected to join the GB Open Water Development Squad. The same year he entered his first International Open Water competition for GB in France, where he won a bronze medal. In 2007 he went on to win the National Open Water Gran Prix and South East & West Open Water Gran Prix. He then joined Team Bath, winning 4 BUSA medals - gold, 2 silvers and a bronze - in his first year.
