We pride ourselves on the teaching and learning that takes place in our classrooms. Lessons are focussed, appropriately paced, varied and engaging. Our pupils take pleasure in their learning, are mutually supportive and applaud success. Pupils are on task academically and quickly develop an intellectual curiosity, the courage to challenge and a love of learning.
We believe that lessons are best when the girls are actively involved in a dynamic process of thinking and discovering understanding for themselves. Girls thrive as independent learners. We are committed to employing the best methods to support the specific learning styles of girls. In our classrooms you will see teachers blending the best of the traditional teaching techniques that are stimulating and appropriate, with new teaching strategies and innovative methods to enhance our girls’ learning.
Our teachers are highly qualified subject specialists who work together to convey their knowledge and passion to the girls. Each department is ably led by their Head of Department who has high expectations of their team, drawing the department together on a regular basis to review the curriculum, monitor progress and develop new teaching and learning techniques. We have a professional development and planning programme to ensure that teaching is up to date and our Horizon Hour encourages staff to remain continuous learners. Our biennial review of Departments and sharing of good practice helps to ensure consistently high standards are maintained across all departments.
Lessons are sixty minutes in length and are arranged across a two week timetable cycle chosen to accommodate our broad curriculum and provide flexible subject choice to tailor the needs of individual learners. All lessons take place in well-furnished classrooms equipped with a wide range of teaching resources, including computers, projectors, interactive whiteboards, extensive up to date book stocks and scientific and technical apparatus. We also have a number of specialist teaching facilities, including 12 laboratories, 5 ICT suites, recently refurbished music centre with music technology studio, radio station, two drama studios and impressive art, textiles and design and technology centres.
The quality of teaching and learning however, is not dependent on facilities. The quality of learning at Bedford Girls’ School is testament to the expertise, dynamism and commitment of our staff and their ability to tailor their teaching to the knowledge, aptitudes and learning styles of individual girls.
